Kolkata, Jul 30 (IANS) Arpita Mukherjee, the close aide of Partha Chatterjee tainted in the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) multi-crore recruitment scam, has informed the Enforcement Branch (ED ) that his residence in Belgharia in the northern outskirts of Kolkata had several duplicate keys and was therefore accessible to many other people in his absence.
From Wednesday evening until early Thursday morning, ED detectives recovered cash worth Rs 27.90 crore and 6 kg of gold from this particular residence officially owned by Mukherjee.
ED sources said they will try to confirm Mukherjee’s confession about this with the caretaker, security personnel and other residents of said housing complex to find out if they noticed anyone other than her entering the apartment opening the keys.
Footage from CCTV cameras installed in said housing complex will also be verified.
“We don’t completely refute her statements on this, because the way huge cash and packed gold were hidden in different parts of the apartment, it was quite difficult for her alone to accomplish this task” , said an ED official.
Meanwhile, ED detectives began the process of identifying and freezing the fictitious bank accounts, which they believe were used to transfer the proceeds of the scam to various channels.
We learn that the process of freezing eight of these bank accounts has already been completed and that others are in sight.
Some of the bank accounts of Chatterjee’s next of kin and associates are also under the scanner.
“Now the process will begin for the second step of tracking the money trail which is to identify the channels through which the money has flowed from these bank accounts,” the ED official said.
Incidentally, the recovery of silver and gold from Mukherjee’s residence in Belgharia was the second phase of the ED detectives’ recovery of the treasure.
From the evening of July 22 which continued till the morning of the following day, the ED recovered a similar treasure from the Diamond City residence of Mukherjee at Tollygunge in South Kolkata in Indian and foreign currencies, ornaments in gold and several Apple iPhones.
Immediately after the first round of recovery, Chatterjee and Mukherjee were arrested by the investigative agency.
