The series launched on September 30, 2021 with an interactive discussion on COVID-19 and the vaccine led by Dr. Mara Minguez. Dr. Minguez presented an overview of COVID-19 where key facts about COVID-19, information on vaccines and eligibility, and variants of COVID-19 were discussed.
On October 7 and November 9, Aiyana Rivera Rodriguez, MD and Sebastian Cisneros, MD, both child and adolescent psychiatrists at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center, spoke to families about mental health. In their presentation, titled “Mental Health and Back-to-School Preparedness During COVID-19,” Dr. Rivera-Rodriguez and Dr. Cisneros spoke about the grief, bereavement, and trauma of COVID-19 and discussed advice and techniques to help families cope with trauma related to COVID-19.
The 21st of October and November 16 sessions were devoted to the theme of nutrition. The sessions were led by Ileana VargasMD, Pediatric Endocrinologist, NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and Kyle Murray, MS, RD, CDN, CDE, Community Nutrition Specialist, NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Mr. Murray and Dr. Vargas spoke to families, students and staff about nutrition and presented an educational overview of the importance of reading nutrition labels and incorporating healthy eating into daily life. Dr. Vargas and Mr. Murray also spoke about the challenges and impact that COVID-19 has brought to our eating habits.
