How to match foundation
(No matter your skin tone)
Pick the right shade of foundation and your skin shouldn’t look made up at all. Instead, it should just look like beautiful skin – luminous, healthy, and flawless. Counterintuitively, finding an exact match with a foundation or tinted moisturizer isn’t the goal, says Kosas founder Sheena Yaitanes. “You try to find the most flattering option for your skin,” she says.
Whether your vibe is subtly perfecting tint, full-coverage cream, or something in between, Yaitanes and top makeup artist and Westman Atelier founder Gucci Westman are here to help you focus on the perfect makeup to wear forever. shade suitable for your skin type.
UNDERTONES ARE KEY
Regardless of your skin color, undertones matter more than anything else, Yaitanes says. “You can get away with foundation that’s slightly too dark or too light as long as the shade is right,” she says. “This is especially important for olive skin tones: anything too warm looks muddy and takes away the luminosity we all crave. If your undertones are pink, choose a cool-rated foundation. If your undertones are warm, you want a foundation with warm undertones to avoid looking ashy.
MATCHES THE COLOR OF YOUR LIGHTEST SKIN
Most people’s skin is darker in the summer and lighter in the colder months. “Choose a shade that suits your skin in winter; then you can add some heat in the summer,” says Westman. “If you’re very careful about your sun exposure, one shade can get you through all the seasons. I prefer to use two shades to create the perfect finish – I use one as a concealer and one to tie it all together.

TRANSPARENT AND BUILDABLE FORMULAS ARE MUCH MORE NATURAL
Full-coverage foundations don’t mimic the skin’s natural glow and texture as convincingly as more sheer formulas, which highlight your natural undertones instead of masking them. You can create a more sheer formula to get more coverage, and the result will look more natural than a coat of a heavier product.

WHERE TO TEST IT: HANDS, THEN FACE
“Start with a test on the back of your hand and find a color that looks like you – you’ll know when you see it. Once you’ve decided on a shade or two, try them all over your face,” says Yaitanes. “A lot of people just use the jawline, but I think the whole cheek is important, around the nose and even down to the underside of the eye. You want to make sure the color is flattering and makes you feel good. Do you like the way you look with this foundation more than you did when it was out? If that sounds weird, it probably is.

USE NATURAL LIGHT
“Natural light is key because you can see the truest color and shade and ensure the product blends properly into your skin,” says Yaitanes. “Store lighting can distort the appearance of foundation on your skin.”
CHECK FOR POTENTIAL DEFECTS
There’s nothing prettier than the look of real skin, and using more product than necessary distracts from its glow and can also accentuate pores and fine lines. Even if you have blemishes, leave the unblemished areas bare. “I call it a spot check — you’re only targeting problem areas instead of applying foundation all over your face,” says Westman.
