by Sylvester Stallone super hero movie Samaritan finally has a trailer. Originally slated to release in 2020, it was delayed for many years due to various studio acquisitions. With a focus on the kind of anti-hero story similar to Will Smith’s HancockSamaritan is presented as a vision of what happens to superheroes when they are past their prime.
The trailer shows Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone) working as a garbage collector in the fictional town of Granite City when 13-years Sam Cleary (Umbrella Academyit is Javon “Wanna” Walton) suspects he might actually be the legendary Samaritan. The Samaritan was believed to have died in a fiery battle in a warehouse with his nemesis… Nemesis. I’d like to joke, but that’s the name of his rival. The rest of the trailer feels just as heavy, with Stallone running around, battling the cumbersome classic villains, and taking on Pilou Asbæk (game of thronesEuron Greyjoy) like Nemesis. There’s a pretty standard blandness here, and without any really interesting visuals or ideas showcased in this trailer. Samaritan seems decidedly missable, if not downright mediocre.
Right now, superhero stories should really try to push the envelope in order to create something new, or even just something fun to watch, but judging by this trailer, Samaritan seems to do neither of those things, featuring the same old, same old superhero just with a different name attached. If you’re still curious enough to check it out, Samaritan is set to release August 26 on Prime Video.
