New Delhi, July 23 (IANSlife): When was the last time you heard a man discuss his sexual wellbeing in a peer group or in a social setting, or even with his loved ones? Chances are you’ve never heard of such a thing. These conversations, while critical, just don’t happen.
Although as individuals we are programmed to share our problems with our loved ones, some conversations still take place in low tones. Sexual well-being is one such topic. Since these issues are not brought up and people refrain from seeking treatment due to lack of awareness and good online platforms in the country.
Just like physical and mental well-being, men need to take care of their sexual well-being to lead a healthy and happy life. Fortunately, we are on the way to speaking out loud and clear about these issues as a society. Sexual wellness consultations increased by almost 139% in 2020 compared to the previous year.
Sexual health and efficiency are taboo in society and specifically for men for various reasons. It is often assumed that sexual activity is more natural for men than for women. Although this is false, this notion becomes even more troublesome when men are not able to perform in bed. Men suffer much more from performance anxiety than women, which is one of the main causes of erectile dysfunction.
The commonly used term for ED is impotence. The simple association of this word with men arouses unease in social circles and, more often than not, leads to a bruised image. But the problem is not as rare, just less mentioned.
According to the Massachusetts Male Aging Study, nearly half of men between the ages of 40 and 70 experience this problem for reasons ranging from arterial dysfunction to other abnormalities that can be controlled and treated. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by endocrine diseases such as prostate dysfunction, hypogonadism or even diabetes.
Difficulty maintaining an erection may very well be caused by fibrosis or atrophy, which is an organic enough process but can also be caused by drugs or smoking. Another myth surrounding male sexual health is that erectile dysfunction is a psychological disorder. Although the cause may be neurological, the problem definitely needs to be probed for clarity and further treatment.
Libido comes naturally to all genders, given that they are in an appropriate space in their heads. Sexual pleasure is a recreational activity that does not need to be and ideally is not meant to be imposed on anyone. So, not being in the right mental space, such as feeling stressed or anxious, could lead to low libido. There can be very many reasons that need to be checked by an expert.
Generally, one in three men complains of premature orgasms. This creates a lot of pressure on men as they feel unable to please their women. This further leads to a loss of self-confidence, a negative impact on their mental health and even serious problems.
The days when there was no scientific explanation for biological processes are over. Society has come a long way to know for sure that there are underlying causes for many activities that affect sexual health. All the community needs to do collectively now is talk openly about sexual diseases and discomfort like other diseases. The bubble needs to burst now more than ever as we live in a time where multiple genders exist in society.
Sexual pleasure, like any other need in life, is the responsibility of the individual. But acceptance in relationships plays an important role in setting up this kind of out loud communication. It helps improve relationships and emotional health and leads to increased confidence and perspective in all aspects of life. Again, acceptance is key in the end.
